In the context of the “Bologna process” and the evolving common European higher education area there is a growing demand on comparative information about European universities for prospective students. In 2004 the CHE has begun to internationalise its ranking in a step-by-step-approach. After including the universities of Austria and Switzerland the universities of the Netherlands and Flanders will be included into the CHE ranking. In a first step there will be a pilot study covering three disciplines/subject areas: pysychology, electrical engineering and one field of the humanities. Indicators and data collection will have to be adjusted to the structures of the national higher education systems as well as to different academic cultures in the participating countries. For each subject areas data will include information on both teaching and research performance, as well as on facilities and student services.
