The new Master’s ranking of the CHE Centre for Higher Education is now available. The latest survey shows a high level of satisfaction among Master’s students in Computer Science, despite a noticeably longer duration of study compared to other subjects. Mathematics, physics and computer science were assessed this year.

In Computer Science, almost 90 per cent of students give a very good rating for their general study situation (4 out of a total of 5 stars). The subject is one of the most popular in Germany.

The longer duration of study in computer science is striking: at 53 per cent of universities, at least half of the students exceed the standard four-semester period of study and study for longer than six semesters.

‘This is often due to the fact that students are already working in their field during their studies,’ explains Sonja Berghoff, Head of National Rankings at CHE. At 19 and 23 per cent respectively, the subjects of physics and mathematics, which were also examined, have a significantly lower rate of overstaying the standard period of study.

Depending on the subject, up to 15 criteria are taken into account in the Master’s comparison. In addition to the overall study situation, students also assess the transition to the Master’s programme and the range of courses on offer. For Computer Science, the rating for the transition to the Master’s programme (4.3 stars) and the support in studies (4.1 stars) is very positive. Only the practical orientation in teaching received a slightly lower rating of 3.9 stars at universities.

Around 7,500 Master’s students were surveyed for the ranking between January and August 2024. All results of the CHE ranking for Master’s and undergraduate degree programmes can be found at https://www.university-ranking.de.
